Nike’s 'Back to the Future' Self-Lacing Trainers

Come the 21st October this year, there’s a very slim chance that a heavily pimped DeLorean DMC-12 will suddenly appear in an 80's flash of smoke and laser beam, as it breaks all known laws of the ‘space time continuum.’ If this does indeed happen, it will almost certainly be proceeded by a proclamation of ‘Great Scott!’ Why? Because this is the date that Marty McFly travels forward to in the cult movie, Back to the Future 2.

Back to the Future was an eighties film trilogy whereby protagonist, Marty McFly, was able to travel forwards and backwards in time thanks to the alterations his harebrained professor friend, known only as ‘the Doc,’ had made to a stainless steel automobile. No doubt, anyone who ever watched the films dreamt about following in the footsteps of Michael J Fox’s savvy character, and while time travel is no nearer a reality, his futuristic shoes certainly are...

To commemorate the date, Nike are finally releasing the trainers that every fanboy and girl have had atop of their Christmas lists for the last twenty-five years since the film’s release. So, what was so special about these particular sneakers? Well, not only did they look seriously cool, but they tied their own laces. That’s what.

Tinker Hatfield was the original designer who attempted to envisage 2015 in the 1989 film, with his portrayal of the Nike MAGs. And whether it’s purely to retain an element of self respect, and give off the impression that his prediction was an accurate one, him and his team have now confirmed that the iconic hightops will be available to purchase by the end of the year. Nike first announced the upcoming footwear early 2014, and followed this up with an official patent for the technology in the following July.

The company have already released a previous version of Marty McFly’s trainers back in 2011, albeit without the ‘power lacing’ ability. They were only sold on eBay and yet managed to raise an impressive £3.1million for the Michael J Fox Foundation, which funds research into Parkinson’s disease. This updated replica will no doubt walk all over the previous figure.

Though little is known about the ‘wolf grey’ kicks, early indications from the social impact they’ve already created, means it’s highly likely they’ll run off the shelves. All we know is that they’ll look absolutely unstoppable with a pair of Be An Athlete Grey Tracksuit Bottoms – the ultimate in comfort meets the ultimate in laziness!

Let us know in the comment box if the prospect of Nike's self-lacing trainers ties you up in knots, and what other predictions from the 1989 film you’d like to see become a reality!
